A source at the Pacific Institute of Organic Biochemistry, part of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported the discovery of compounds in sea cucumbers that inhibit the growth of breast cancer.

According to the source, scientists were able to isolate two compounds from sea cucumbers living in the Chukchi Sea, whose effect is not limited to inhibiting the growth of one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer, but also extends to preventing the spread of cancer cells, with little effect on healthy cells.
The source said: "The sea cucumber of the species Ocnus glacialis in the Chukchi Sea may become a new source for developing anti-cancer drugs, after scientists were able to isolate two unique compounds from it, glacialisoside A and B, which specifically target cancer cells, while not significantly affecting healthy cells. Their strongest effect was recorded against triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant types of tumors."
According to the researchers, normal breast cells were not affected by the two compounds, which raises hopes that the side effects of the treatment can be reduced.
The researchers said: "Most importantly, these substances, even at minute doses of less than 0.2 micromoles, stopped the division of cancer cells, while a concentration of 1 micromole completely stopped the growth of colonies. This means that they may be able to eliminate cancer cells and prevent their spread as well."
The researchers confirmed that the effectiveness of the two compounds depends directly on the presence of sulfate groups and their location in the molecule.
They added: "This discovery opens the way for the creation of a new class of drugs based on glycosides extracted from polar invertebrates."
