A group of Real Madrid fans sparked widespread controversy after chanting anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim slogans ahead of the team's Champions League match against Inter Milan.
According to the Spanish newspaper " Diario Sport ", the Union of Jewish Communities in Spain sent a letter to the president of the Spanish Football Federation, Rafael Lucan, expressing its "deep concern and firm rejection" of the chants that were made near the "Santiago Bernabeu" stadium.
According to the letter, the chants included anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim slogans. The union considered one of the slogans to be an explicit incitement to violence against Jews, while the other, according to its assessment, carried a message of exclusion against Spanish Muslims because of their religion or cultural affiliation.
The federation stressed that these actions do not represent Real Madrid fans in general, but demanded a "clear and firm" response, calling for measures to be taken to prevent a recurrence of such events.
He also stressed that the Spanish Football Federation is capable of taking a public stance against such behavior, even if the incident occurred during a European match, and of working with clubs to counter manifestations of bigotry and intolerance.
Real Madrid had achieved a 2-1 victory over Inter last Tuesday, in the Champions League, with the team's goals scored by Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde.
