Fenerbahce's return to the Champions League turned into chaos on Tuesday night, after coach Ismail Kartal announced his resignation following a 1-1 draw with Roma.
Kartal, 65, said during the post-match press conference that he had decided to leave his post "to clear the way for the club," stressing that he would not go back on his decision.
But club president Aziz Yildirim quickly came out just minutes later to announce that the coach would stay, revealing that Kartal had been hit during the match by a water bottle thrown by a fan, which caused him great anger and pressure.
The Fenerbahce president said: "I just spoke with him and asked him to continue. We are one family."
This comes at a time of increasing pressure on Fenerbahce, who have finished second in the Turkish league for the last five seasons, despite spending heavily to strengthen their squad.
The match against Roma was the team's first in the main stage of the Champions League in 18 years, before the controversy surrounding Kartal's resignation overshadowed the European return.
