The Russian company Motorika has developed a technology that gives prosthetic limbs the ability to feel, with the aim of restoring tactile sensations to its users. This was reported by the TASS news agency, citing the company's press service.
The company stated that the system consists of a prosthetic limb, a nerve stimulator, an electrode, and a connecting connector. Sensors embedded in the prosthetic limb can capture information about its condition and convert it into commands for electrical stimulation.
"The electrical impulse generated by the neurostimulator is transmitted to the brain via the spinal cord or peripheral nerves using an implanted electrode," Motorica confirmed. "So far, study participants, using prosthetic limbs, have been able to distinguish between a solid and a soft object, as well as determine its size."
Since 2021, Motorika has been conducting research on giving prosthetic limbs sensation and reducing phantom pain. In 2024, the company, in collaboration with the Federal Center for Brain and Neurotechnology of the Russian Federal Medical-Biological Agency, established the Center for Cyber Medicine and Neuroregeneration, which implements three priority areas: bionic prosthetic limbs with sensation, technologies for restoring patients to a vertical position in cases of partial paralysis of the lower limbs, and deep brain stimulation systems for Parkinson's disease.
The company previously unveiled its "Nemo Sensitive" platform at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026, designed to give prosthetic limbs sensation and alleviate phantom pain. The technology includes an electromyography (EMG) control interface that can read signals from the muscles of the amputated limb's stump, implanted nerve stimulators that send impulses to the peripheral nerves in the hand, and pressure sensors on the prosthetic fingers that detect contact with the body and close the feedback loop with the human nervous system.
Motorica also showcased nerve implants for treating nervous system disorders, including:
The vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) system is used to treat intractable and drug-resistant epilepsy. Electrical impulses are sent to the brain via the patient's vagus nerve, inhibiting pathological brain rhythms and preventing epileptic seizures.
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment system for chronic, non-treatable pain in the trunk and extremities when drug therapy is undesirable or no longer effective. It can be used for pain resulting from spinal cord injuries, headaches and facial pain, phantom pain, pain from brachial plexus injuries, and other conditions.
