British driver Olly Melroy of the AAI Motorsport team thanked his Dutch rival Luc Hartogh for saving his life during the China Sportscar Championship race held in Shanghai.
Milroy, 36, was participating in a round of the China GT Championship at the Shanghai International Circuit when his car collided with two other cars while navigating a turn.
Footage of the accident showed Melroy's car veering violently off the track and spinning before bursting into flames, with flames rising enormously and thick smoke covering the scene.
Driver Luke Hartoch quickly arrived at the scene of the crash, before swiftly unbuckled his seatbelt and jumped out of his car, abandoning his chances of competing for the race win in order to save his rival.
A camera mounted near the driver's seat of Hartoch's car showed the 23-year-old frantically trying to reach Melroy amid the wreckage of the Ferrari, after the British driver was trapped inside the car in a ball of flames.
But Hartoch was initially unable to get Melroy to safety, and had to quickly search for a fire extinguisher to control the flames.
Fire crews then arrived at the scene to deal with the blaze, while Hartoch and members of the circuit crew worked together to move Melroy away from the burning car.
At the end of the clip, Hartoch and Melroy are seen sitting by a wall next to the track, after the British driver miraculously managed to get out of the car and reach safety.
Ollie Milroy, who suffered serious injuries in the crash, made sure to send a message of thanks to his rival Luke Hartoch for saving his life.
Milroy posted a picture of himself from his hospital bed, writing: "I'm still alive tonight thanks to one man. Luke Hartoch stopped immediately, there were no observers or fire crews on the scene, and risked his life to get me out of the car."
He added: "I don't remember anything that happened during the 30 seconds before the incident and even a full hour after it, but I will remember his incredible courage for the rest of my life."
He continued: "One day I will tell this story to our three children, and Luke will also be, in their eyes, the greatest superhero in history."
He added: "I lie here tonight with five broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken hand and finger, as well as a bruised lung, but things could have been much worse."
He concluded his message by saying, "Thank you, Luke. I owe you my life for this act you performed today without thinking of yourself."
For his part, Hartog spoke about the incident via his social media accounts, saying: "When I saw a car turn into a huge ball of flame in the distance in front of me, there was no decision to be made in the first place."
He explained: "From what I saw, I honestly thought the driver might not be able to get out on his own. I stopped, got out of the car and headed towards her. There wasn't a single moment of hesitation."
He added: "It was scary. There were moments when I didn't know if I would actually be able to get Ollie out of the car. But it's not about what I did, and I'm sure many in the same situation would have acted exactly the same way."
