“We do not need a policeman for the region,” Pezeshkian said during a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of a BRICS summit in New Delhi, adding that “the territorial integrity and security of the region can only be guaranteed by the main parties and countries that make it up.”
According to the Iranian presidency website, Pezeshkian emphasized, “Despite all the injustice our people have suffered, we do not want war or its continuation,” stressing that “peace remains our priority.”
The war broke out when the United States and Israel launched a wave of strikes on Iran on February 28, and Tehran retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz, vital to global energy supplies and maritime trade, prompting Washington to impose a blockade on Iranian ports.
Tehran launches missiles and drones at countries in the region and says its strikes target military bases used by the United States in the war, although the attacks have also hit civilian facilities and sites.
