The National Institute of Public Health in the Democratic Republic of Congo announced that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the country has risen to 6,186, while the number of deaths resulting from it has reached 3,007.
The institute's daily report stated: "In the past 24 hours, 86 new cases and 57 deaths were recorded. Thus, the total number of infected people has reached 6,186, and the number of deaths has reached 3,007 since the beginning of the outbreak."
According to estimates from doctors and humanitarian workers interviewed by The Washington Post in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, official statistics may reflect only a fraction of the true number of infections. Many infected individuals do not reach epidemiological surveillance systems, and a significant number die outside of medical facilities.
On August 20, the World Health Organization announced that it had sent 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine to the Democratic Republic of Congo to protect medical workers, as well as to conduct clinical trials.
To date, no vaccine or treatment for the new Ebola strain – Bundibugyo – has received any official approval. However, laboratory data suggests that the new vaccine, Ervebo, may offer some degree of protection.
