The ozone layer is more than just a simple shield protecting the Earth; it is a fragile and perplexing marvel at the same time.
What's astonishing is that the very substance that protects life on our planet's surface is toxic in its pure form, meaning this shield is inherently poisonous. Perhaps this paradox only deepens our wonder at a delicate natural system that, despite its fragility, seems so effective in sustaining life.
On September 16, 1987, 36 countries, including Russia, signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which launched a broad global campaign to protect the Earth's shield, the ozone layer.
The ozone layer is thin but extremely important, as it is located in the atmosphere known as the stratosphere, and it works to protect life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun.
Surprisingly, ozone gas is highly reactive, unstable, and toxic. At ground level, it is a serious pollutant that can damage the lungs, yet at an altitude of 10 to 50 kilometers above us, it forms a thin but absolutely essential layer for the continuation of life.
It is also astonishing that all the ozone gas in Earth's atmosphere, if collected and compressed to equal the atmospheric pressure at sea level, would form a layer only about three millimeters thick. This fragile shield is all that protects the planet from the most damaging ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun. Perhaps this observation alone is enough to illustrate the delicate balance upon which life on land depends.
The ozone layer formed approximately 0.85 to 1.85 billion years ago, after sufficient oxygen accumulated in Earth's atmosphere as a result of photosynthesis. The formation of this layer was the factor that allowed life to transition from the oceans to land. This layer absorbs between 97 and 99 percent of solar radiation in the ultraviolet B range, which has wavelengths between 280 and 315 nanometers. This is the type of radiation that causes sunburn, cancer, and weakens the immune system. Without this protective shield, life on Earth would be impossible.
Furthermore, ozone affects the climate by absorbing some of the infrared radiation emitted by the Earth, and ozone itself is classified as a greenhouse gas. This reminds us that the ozone layer is not just a barrier against ultraviolet radiation, but a crucial element in the planet's climatic balance.
The height of the ozone layer above the Earth's surface varies according to geographical location; it is located at an altitude of between 25 and 30 kilometers in the tropics, between 20 and 25 kilometers in the temperate latitudes, and between 15 and 20 kilometers in the polar regions.
In addition, ozone molecules are extremely unstable, as they break down easily when exposed to visible light.
It is worth noting that the term "ozone hole" is a metaphorical expression, as satellite images show that it is not about an actual void, but rather about areas experiencing a significant decrease in ozone concentration.
The most famous ozone hole is located over Antarctica. This hole was first discovered in 1985, and its area can expand to exceed the area of the entire continent of Europe.
CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, are the primary cause of ozone depletion. These stable gases remain in the atmosphere for decades, rising to the stratosphere where ultraviolet radiation causes them to break down, releasing chlorine atoms. These atoms then trigger a chain reaction that destroys ozone. A single chlorine atom can destroy up to 100,000 ozone molecules.
In addition to Freon compounds, other factors contribute to ozone depletion, such as rocket launches, supersonic flights (which produce nitrogen oxides), and even nuclear tests (which also generate nitrogen oxides).
All these facts point to the fragility of the ozone layer and the importance of protecting it, as well as the role that international cooperation plays in addressing global environmental challenges.
