As September approaches, it might seem strange that the "Summer Triangle" remains prominent in the sky, despite the approach of autumn. But this famous cluster of stars—Vega, Deneb, and Altair—is not just a beautiful shape; it's one of the easiest landmarks to identify in the sky.

By identifying these three stars, one can access the Milky Way, constellations, and many other celestial bodies. Their importance lies in the fact that the stars remain bright enough to be easily seen even in twilight and the pervasive light pollution of cities, while their position helps the observer understand the seasonal sky structure.
The three stars are located in three different constellations—or star groups—with Altair in the constellation Lyra Altair in the constellation Aquila, and Deneb in the constellation Cygnus.
To understand its association with summer, it's not so much about the calendar as it is about the apparent path of stars throughout the night. In summer, the triangle remains visible from nightfall until dawn, while in autumn it begins to set before dawn but remains high and prominent in the evening until later in the season. This is why it can be clearly seen on September nights and remains visible well into late autumn.
3 stars and 3 completely different distances
Interestingly, the three stars do not form a true triangle in space; they only appear so from Earth's perspective. The closest to Earth is Altair, at about 16.7 light-years away, followed by Vega at about 25 light-years away, while Deneb is located at a distance of approximately 1600 light-years, although estimates vary among astronomical sources.
This means that the light from the hen's tail that we see today began its journey to us a very long time ago, while the light from the eagle and the flying eagle is much closer in time.
However, the Hen's tail appears brilliant despite its immense distance because it is a super-bright, blue giant with a radiant energy tens of thousands of times that of the sun. The Vulture and the Eagle also appear exceptionally bright because they are closer to us.
Thus, the triangle offers a simple lesson in astronomy: that the brightness the eye sees does not necessarily mean that the star is brighter in reality.
The Summer Triangle in Arab Heritage
The Arabs have many stories about the summer sky, and the Summer Triangle features prominently in them, as it is associated with two eagles, one of which folds its wings and falls, while the other spreads its wings and flies. Each triangle is composed of three stars: the bright star and two others.
