US officials as saying that Trump had expressed a willingness to ease sanctions on Iran and release frozen funds in exchange for Tehran taking concrete steps regarding its nuclear program, noting that this development was raised during diplomatic contacts conducted by mediators from Qatar and Pakistan with the aim of reaching an agreement between Washington and Tehran.
In Tehran, Qalibaf said during a public session of the parliament on Tuesday that his country would not back down in the face of threats or a blockade, and that it would respond to any aggression with harsh, painful, decisive and swift reprisals, stressing that the United States must change its policy toward Iran.
Qalibaf criticized Trump's statements, considering them evidence that Washington "has not changed its behavior yet," adding: "The Americans must realize that the stage of intimidation and threats aimed at destroying this civilized nation has ended." He stressed that Tehran would take a similar stance if the US administration changed its "hostile position" towards it.
The Iranian official described Trump's statements about America's control of the Strait of Hormuz as "delusions," threatening to prevent oil sales in the region if Iran is unable to sell its oil. He said, "In a region where we do not sell oil, no one else will be able to sell oil, and if our security is not guaranteed, no infrastructure will be safe."
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, which responded with attacks on Israel and American targets in the region, before a ceasefire agreement was reached last April.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on June 18, but its implementation has stalled due to disagreements over the security of the strait.
Between July 8 and 24, the United States resumed its attacks on Iran, and Tehran responded by targeting "American military facilities and equipment" in Arab countries.
