Translational Psychiatry notes that, according to researchers, this relationship was particularly strong in women, as shown by an analysis of data from more than 45,000 participants in the British Biobank, who were born between 1951 and 1956, during which restrictions on the sale of sugar were gradually lifted in the post-war United Kingdom.
This allowed researchers to compare individuals exposed to different levels of sugar during fetal development and the first two years of life. It turned out that those who lived longer with restricted sugar intake had the lowest risk of developing anxiety.
In addition, researchers discovered differences in several brain regions among individuals who consumed less sugar in early childhood. They were also less inclined to eat sweet foods in adulthood.
However, the relationship with depression became less clear after taking other factors into account.
The researchers emphasize that these findings do not prove that sugar directly causes anxiety disorders, but they do point to the potential long-term impact of nutrition in the early years of life.
