According to the journal "Alzheimer's & Dementia," researchers reached this conclusion after studying data from more than 2,400 Americans over a period of 16 years.

The researchers analyzed the participants' employment histories and assessed their cognitive functions. They discovered that men who experienced job instability scored lower on cognitive tests, consistent with indicators of more pronounced brain aging, equivalent to about seven years older than expected.

For women, tests of memory and executive functions, related to planning and decision-making, showed lower performance among those who retired early or were unemployed for extended periods. Researchers estimated that these characteristics are associated with approximately six additional years of brain aging.

At the end of the follow-up period, approximately 30% of women and 31% of men showed symptoms of mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

Researchers believe that continuity of job activity, rather than a sense of job security, may be an important factor in maintaining cognitive health.

According to them, regular work in middle age may contribute to maintaining mental alertness, and is therefore associated with slowing age-related cognitive decline.

Scientists emphasize that the study shows an association, but it does not prove a direct effect of work on brain health. Other factors related to work history and lifestyle may also influence cognitive health.
