A controversial theory: Do Europe and North America form one continent

Geological studies have raised the hypothesis that Europe and North America may be linked by remnants of an ancient continental crust beneath the North Atlantic Ocean, despite having separated millions of years ago.

This hypothesis is adopted by Dr. Jordan Fethian from the University of Derby in Britain, based on two scientific studies:

The researchers used gravity data, seismic surveys, and computer models to study the thickness of the Earth's crust and reconstruct the movement of tectonic plates.

A study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment cast doubt on this hypothesis, suggesting that the thick crust beneath Iceland was formed by volcanic activity associated with what is known as a "hot spot," and not as a result of remaining parts of the ancient continental crust.

The Earth's landmass is traditionally classified into seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

The definition of a continent is based on geological, historical, and cultural factors; for example, Europe and Asia are classified as separate continents despite being connected within a single landmass known as Eurasia.

These studies do not prove that Europe and North America constitute one continent, but they open the door to further research into the history of continental separation and the evolution of the Earth's crust.
