The scientist told RIA Novosti, commenting on the possibility of the fever spreading in Europe , including its eastern part: "The risk of spreading is quite real. The virus is already present in all countries of the Mediterranean basin, and new cases are being recorded among humans and animals in northern European countries, such as Belgium and the Netherlands."

Montarci pointed out that infected birds migrating due to climate change could carry the virus to new areas, stressing that it is difficult to predict exactly where the fever will spread.

According to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), as of the end of last September, local human cases had been recorded in 16 European countries, including Italy, Greece, Spain, France and the Netherlands.

West Nile fever is a viral disease that spreads among birds and is transmitted to humans through the bites of mosquitoes that feed on the blood of infected birds. 80% of those infected may not show symptoms, while some may experience fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and nausea. In a very small number of cases, the infection may develop into a chronic neurological disease that causes encephalitis or meningitis, which may lead to the patient's death.

There are currently no effective vaccines for humans against the disease, but prevention methods include avoiding mosquito bites and being in areas where stagnant water pools may be found and insects may breed.
