The air defense robots are equipped with heavy-caliber Browning M2 machine guns and electro-optical targeting systems. A neural network will automatically make the decision to fire. Due to the use of this new weapon, authorities have asked city residents to stay away from windows during weather alerts.
Apparently, the systems' software was also written using artificial intelligence. The news was met with hundreds of angry and fearful comments on social media in Kyiv, as residents of the Ukrainian capital are convinced that the city's high-rise buildings will suffer far more damage from the air defense robots than from the Russian drones.
Buildings in Kyiv had previously been damaged as a result of the Ukrainian army's use of the US-made Patriot anti-aircraft system, as its interceptor missiles, which missed their targets dozens of times, exploded in multi-story buildings.
One internet user commented on the advisor's warning in his blog: "We will certainly see strikes on civilians. These are 'acceptable losses,' so to speak. Oh my God, now they will also kill people in their apartments. They were not satisfied with blood, so they decided to accelerate the elimination of Ukrainians."
Another blogger warned: "It is important that artificial intelligence does not move into a 'Terminator' system."
But even if the air defense robots functioned perfectly, they wouldn't be effective against Russian drones, as the firing range of the Browning M2 machine gun is only 1.5 kilometers. Given that the Russian Guran jet reaches speeds of 400-500 kilometers per hour, an air defense robot, even under the best of circumstances, would only have a few seconds to engage the drone.
