Before you give your child coffee... an expert reveals the dangers of caffeine for young
According to her, it is advisable to prevent children under the age of 14 from drinking coffee, as it may cause hyperactivity and insomnia.
She says: “Every 100 grams of Arabica coffee contains 1.2-1.5 grams of caffeine. Therefore, most healthy adults are advised to consume it in moderation, not exceeding three cups a day. Children under the age of 12-14 are also prohibited from consuming it due to the incomplete development of their nervous systems, as caffeine is likely to cause hyperactivity and insomnia in them.”
The expert points out that even for teenagers aged 14 to 18, their daily caffeine intake should not exceed 100 mg.
According to her, pregnant women are advised to reduce their caffeine intake to less than 200 mg per day, because caffeine crosses the placenta and may cause vasoconstriction in the fetus.
It should be noted that caffeine is not only found in coffee, but also in black and green tea, soft drinks such as cola, chocolate, and especially energy drinks popular among school students.
For example, a standard 250ml can of energy drink contains about 80mg of caffeine. This means that one cup of coffee or one can of energy drink could provide almost the recommended daily amount of caffeine for teenagers, so it's important for parents to be aware of all sources of caffeine in their children's diets.
