He said: "In the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, the nerve endings in the limbs are subjected to severe pressure, leading to weakness, numbness, and impaired movement. The term 'carpal tunnel' is used because the nerves are often compressed inside the narrow carpal tunnel in the wrist area."
He explained that women are almost twice as likely as men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, due to anatomical differences, as their carpal tunnel is typically narrower. He added that the syndrome is becoming more commonly diagnosed among young people as a result of the increased time they spend using computers and other digital devices.
He noted that carpal tunnel syndrome was previously associated with women who milked cows manually, but it is becoming increasingly common among office workers, as working for long periods on the computer leads to continuous strain on the wrist, which can cause pressure on the median nerve responsible for sensation in the palm and fingers.
The syndrome is usually diagnosed in people between the ages of 40 and 60, but it is increasingly being observed in people in their 20s and 30s. A risk factor is prolonged use of a computer mouse and other devices that place continuous strain on the wrist.
According to him, in the early stages of carpal tunnel syndrome, symptoms can be alleviated by regulating the load on the wrist and improving posture. It is important to avoid raising the arms while using a computer and to adjust the height of the desk and chair to ensure a comfortable wrist position.
The doctor advised reducing pressure on the wrist by using a supportive medical pillow, taking breaks every 30 to 60 minutes, or changing the position of the hands. A wrist brace or splint can also be used at night to keep the wrist straight and reduce pressure on the median nerve.
He added that recurrent wrist pain and numbness in the fingers may be signs of an underlying medical condition, and therefore it is advisable to consult a neurologist when these symptoms appear, as damage to the median nerve may require surgical intervention in some cases.
