The experiment involved 120 young people. Initially, the volunteers performed complex, time-bound mathematical tasks designed to elicit a stress response. Afterward, the participants listened to either calming piano music or the sounds of rain, streams, and waterfalls. Scientists assessed their mood, physiological indicators, and brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
The results showed that piano music helped in recovering from stress faster than nature sounds, as the emotional state of the participants improved, and their heart rate and sweat gland activity returned to normal at a faster pace.
MRI scans revealed that music alters the interactions between brain regions responsible for sound perception and stress regulation, with the auditory cortex, insula, and thalamus playing a crucial role. Furthermore, the quality of the sound itself wasn't the only factor; the structure of the musical pieces also played a significant part. Alternating between fast and slow passages helped the brain transition from a state of tension to one of relaxation.
The authors believe that listening to music can become a simple and accessible way to recover from emotional stress.
