The journal Frontiers in Nutrition noted that scientists, during their study on alcohol and ways to prevent its effects, were able to develop special nanoparticles of corn peptides - which are small protein fragments - and combine them with specific carbohydrates, which helped these particles penetrate liver cells, enabling them to neutralize free radicals that damage body cells.
To test the effectiveness of these materials, the researchers exposed liver cells to alcohol and observed that cell vitality decreased to 48.87%, but after exposing them to the new nanoparticles, cell vitality increased to 75.18%. Moreover, these compounds helped reduce oxidative stress, a process in which cells are damaged by excess free radicals.
The researchers noted that the experiments they conducted were carried out in laboratory conditions and have not yet been clinically tested on humans, but they promise the possibility of using corn-derived materials in the future to develop a basis for liver treatments for the effects of alcohol.
Many scientists around the world are seeking treatments that help restore the health of the liver and its tissues damaged as a result of injuries, alcohol consumption, or an unhealthy diet. In an important step in this field, scientists from the Russian universities of Bauman and Sechenov and the Russian National Medical Research Center for Organ Transplantation were able to develop a cell therapy that helps restore liver tissues affected by fibrosis.
