Discovering new mechanisms for the development of psoriasis

Scientists from Sechenov Medical University have discovered new mechanisms that contribute to the development of psoriasis, which may form the basis for the development of specialized personalized treatments.

Researchers have demonstrated, for the first time, that the number of unique T-cell receptor sequences in damaged skin far exceeds that in healthy tissue by tens and hundreds of times. These receptors help immune cells recognize targets and are presumed to respond to specific skin proteins that have yet to be identified.

These findings allow scientists to assess the effectiveness of the treatment at the molecular level, including monitoring the reduction in the number of T cells that contribute to inflammation. Scientists hope to develop treatments that directly target these cells in the future.

"This is the next level of personalized medicine," says Olga Olsova, director of the university's dermatology and venereology clinic.

Another study by the researchers revealed a deficiency in regulatory T cells, which normally limit an overactive immune system. These cells were found in 2.84 percent of psoriasis patients, compared to 4.02 percent in healthy individuals. This deficiency may contribute to increased inflammation and the growth of psoriatic plaques.

According to the researchers, these discoveries open up prospects for the development of cell therapy, which involves growing patients' own regulatory cells or specially prepared regulatory cells, and then injecting them into their bodies.
