The expansion comes after the launch of these notifications on Instagram earlier this year.
With this update, Meta will notify parents if their teenagers repeatedly search for self-harm-related content within a short period. Additionally, if a teenager engages in conversations with the smart assistant that suggest potential danger, parents will also be notified.
The company is committed to confidentiality regarding the precise criteria that trigger these notifications, explaining that it has chosen a threshold that requires several short searches to avoid unnecessary warnings.
When this happens, parents receive a notification via text message, email, or WhatsApp, as well as a pop-up notification in the app. The alerts do not specify the search terms or the content of the conversations, but they do recommend talking to the teenagers and provide resources for helplines.
This feature comes as part of Meta's efforts to provide monitored "teen accounts," giving parents more control over privacy settings and limiting teens' ability to see sensitive content and interact with adults.
