Argentina will play a friendly match against Benin early Wednesday morning, which will be a farewell match for Messi, who announced his retirement from international football in a statement he posted on social media at the end of last August.
Scaloni said in statements published by the Argentine newspaper TyC: "I imagine that the farewell match will be emotionally charged for everyone, including Leo. It will be an unforgettable day. It is his day and the day of his teammates as well, who gave him his greatest footballing joys. I am grateful that I will be able to enjoy these moments."
He added: "I imagine that if there were five stadiums the size of the Monumental, they would all be filled with fans. We can barely keep up with the messages coming in. I would like people to realize what Messi offers on the pitch, because that is what we will miss the most."
He noted: "We have always talked about the feeling of nostalgia that will come over us when the time comes for him to leave. Well, that moment has now come. I imagine everyone will be emotionally affected, and he is among them."
He stressed: "From the moment his feet touch the ground of the Monumental Stadium, it will be an unforgettable day for everyone. I am grateful to be a part of this day. We still have two training sessions with him, so we will enjoy the little time that remains."
The Argentina coach continued talking about Messi, saying: "His legacy is that constant drive to be present and active; he was always the first to arrive at the stadium and the last to leave."
He added: "The Argentine national team will continue its journey, and of course without Messi it will not be the same, but we will miss that feeling that he conveys, which I have not seen in anyone else. I know players and I have played alongside great players and I have faced great players, but that feeling that he conveys I have not seen in anyone else."
Messi had won two Copa America titles, a 2022 World Cup title, a 2022 Finalesma Cup, a 2005 Youth World Cup, and a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
