Burkina Faso's president, Ibrahim Traore, has pledged to take "strict measures" regarding the management of the national football team, after the team's trip to Argentina for a friendly match was marred by travel-related problems.
The Burkina Faso national team suffered a crushing defeat against their host Argentina (0-7) in the friendly match that brought them together on October 3, 2026.
The friendly match between Argentina and Burkina Faso witnessed organizational problems for the African team, which resulted in the under-23 team traveling to play the match instead of the first team.
This came after the Burkina Faso players apologized for not playing the match after their flight to Buenos Aires was delayed from September 30 to October 3, the same day as the match.
Ibrahim Traore told French radio station Monte Carlo: "It is true that our football is suffering from an ailment, and we will find the cure soon. But in order to reinvest, this disease must be treated."
He added: "I think we will face important decisions this week that will be important going forward."
He added: "New developments may arise, and we will do our best to nurture the young players and prepare them for upcoming tournaments. I told the president of the federation last time: we usually don't want to interfere in your affairs, but now we have no choice, as we must intervene."
FIFA prohibits governments from interfering in the affairs of national football associations, which makes the Burkinabe president's comments a tool that FIFA may use to punish the African country.
He concluded: "But if we intervene, it will be to address the issue better. We will inject new energy, and we will look for ways to do things differently."
