FIFA created its own Peace Prize in November 2025, and Trump was the first recipient during the draw ceremony for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, D.C., where FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award to the U.S. President.

The award aims to highlight the humanitarian role of football in light of increasing unrest and instability in the world.

However, awarding it to Trump raised questions and criticism from a number of human rights organizations and circles in the football community, who questioned the transparency of the mechanism for selecting the winner, and saw the decision as having a political character.

In a related context, previous reports indicated that moves had begun in Europe to search for a new candidate for the FIFA presidency, to challenge the current president, Gianni Infantino.

It is likely that a rival nomination will be submitted close to the deadline of November 18, with the aim of reducing the time available for the federation's leadership to obstruct his nomination.

Infantino’s re-election is opposed by UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF.
