Regulators consider the development by New York-based Nolla Health to be a controlled medical artificial intelligence experiment.
There is a specific sequence to the trial: the user first fills out a questionnaire, then photographs their face in the app, and the algorithm analyzes their answers and skin images. It then selects a treatment from a shortlist of medications and topical systems pre-approved by doctors. If the condition doesn't fall within this framework, the system refers the patient to a specialist.
Autonomy will be introduced in phases. For the first 100 patients, the doctor will review the prescriptions first. For the next 500 patients, the AI will be able to write the prescriptions itself, but the doctor will review medical reports daily. Then, specialists will conduct selective weekly check-ups.
According to Nolla's data, the system's recommendations matched the opinions of medical professionals 96% of the time. However, these figures were provided by the company itself, and there has been no independent verification to date.
The app is available only to Utah residents over 18. Treatment is reviewed monthly, and patients can consult a doctor if needed.
