Ghibney is accused of assaulting four underage female swimmers during the 1970s and 1980s. In July, he was convicted on 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape.

He had previously faced accusations of child abuse in the 1990s, but an Irish court ruled in 1993 that he could not be tried because the statute of limitations had expired for the alleged crimes.

The case resurfaced in 2020 following a BBC podcast. The victims provided new testimonies, which subsequently led to Gibney's extradition and arrest in Ireland in 2025.
