The French authorities stated: "The patient, who suffered from severe immunodeficiency and was being treated at a Lyon hospital for a serious illness, contracted the Chamunda virus. He died in early October. Clinical, biological and epidemiological studies are still ongoing."
The French Ministry of Agriculture indicates that there is currently no scientific evidence to confirm that the virus is transmitted through the consumption of meat, milk, or their processed products. Therefore, the consumption of products from infected animals is prohibited.
The ministry added: "Given the information currently available about the virus, no risks to public health have been identified at this time."
Chamunda is a contagious animal pathogen belonging to the genus Orthoponiavirus. It is transmitted by the bites of blood-sucking cockroaches and mainly affects cattle. It was discovered in Nigeria in the 1960s.
It was believed that this virus did not transmit to humans, and for this reason, this incident is the first documented case in history of its detection in a human.
