Jordan announces the killing of more than 20 ISIS members in airstrikes in Syria and regrets civilian casualties

Jordanian Minister of Government Communications and Government Spokesperson, Mohammad Al-Momani, announced on Tuesday that the Royal Air Force airstrikes in southern Syria on Monday killed “more than 20 members” of the Islamic State “ISIS”.

Al-Momani said in a statement, “The initial results of these operations indicate, so far, significant losses in the ranks of ISIS, estimated at more than 20 members, and the destruction of a huge weapons depot belonging to the organization.”

Jordan announced that the raids were in response to the attack on the church in Karak in southern Jordan, noting that the three Jordanian perpetrators of the attack were linked to the targeted groups in Syria.

In a preliminary report issued Monday evening, Syrian authorities confirmed that the Jordanian raids killed seven people, including three children and a woman.

Al-Momani expressed regret for the civilian casualties in Syria, noting that the relevant Jordanian authorities are following up on this matter with their Syrian counterparts.

He explained that work will be done with the Syrian side to form a joint committee to follow up on the repercussions of the operation against the Islamic State “ISIS”, and to develop coordination in combating the “terrorist organization”, in a way that ensures the security of the two countries and the two brotherly peoples and the protection of civilians.

A joint committee will be formed to monitor the repercussions of the operation against ISIS, ensuring the security of both countries and their brotherly peoples, and protecting civilians.

Al-Momani stressed that the security of Jordan and Syria is one, and that combating terrorism, which targeted Jordan a few days ago in the village of Hamoud in Karak, is a common goal for the two countries, which will continue to work on strengthening their deep-rooted fraternal relations.

He concluded his statement by emphasizing that “no one can question Jordan’s commitment to Syria. We have hosted Syrians, stood by them, and provided them with continuous support. The Kingdom seeks to stand by its sister Syria, support its security, strengthen its unity and internal front, and enhance its presence at all levels. Jordan is also coordinating with international parties for the safety of Syrian territory, ensuring its unity and stability, and repelling ambitions against it, especially in southern Syria.”
