The researchers analyzed medical data from approximately 88,000 people with an average age of about 72 years, who had metabolic fatty liver disease. Half of them were taking GLP-1 medications, while the other half were not.
The results showed that taking the aforementioned medications was associated with a 28% reduction in the risk of liver failure, a serious complication in which the liver stops functioning properly. Furthermore, patients who received these treatments were less likely to be hospitalized overall.
The most notable result was that patients who received GLP-1 drugs had a 45% lower mortality rate from any cause compared to the other group.
However, researchers have also discovered potential downsides to these treatments , as some diseases were diagnosed at higher rates among those taking them, such as osteoporosis and retinopathy, a disease that affects the retina of the eye, and no reduction in the risk of heart attacks and strokes was observed.
GLP-1 drugs work by reducing appetite and slowing digestion by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps the body regulate feelings of hunger and satiety. These drugs can cause side effects such as vomiting, and users often require professional monitoring to maintain weight loss results.
