According to him, the World Health Organization used to classify people over 65 as elderly. However, in 2025, this classification was revised, and according to the new classification, young people are those up to 45 years old, middle-aged people are those up to 60 years old, elderly people are those over 75 years old, while the term "elderly" is used for those over 90 years old, and centenarians for those over 90 years old.
The doctor points out that geriatricians assess a person's health not based on their date of birth, but rather on a wide range of physiological indicators, including physical activity and ability to take care of oneself, cognitive functions, psychological and emotional state, sensory functions, musculoskeletal health, and lifestyle.
According to him, a 60-year-old patient's condition might be closer to that of a middle-aged person, while a 55-year-old might require specialized geriatric care. These are very common situations. For example, a 60-year-old might have no chronic illnesses and maintain a high level of cognitive function, while a 50-year-old might have a complex set of chronic conditions.
He adds that active longevity aims to maintain physical, mental, and social activity after retirement. From a medical perspective, longevity management also includes early detection of risk factors, including diabetes, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure.
