Pope Francis responds to Trump AI concerns are not fake news

Pope Leo XIV expressed his disagreement with US President Donald Trump's statements regarding concerns about artificial intelligence technologies getting out of control, in a direct message he delivered from the papal plane.
Liu explained that concerns about artificial intelligence are not fake news or a hoax, as Trump has described them on more than one occasion, stressing the need to discuss the safety issues raised by AI experts and work to resolve them seriously.
He also stressed that he is not alarmed by artificial intelligence technologies, despite the seriousness and gravity of the warnings raised by experts and artificial intelligence specialists.

Leo was one of the first to call for strict regulation of artificial intelligence and for slowing down technology to serve humanity in his first papal encyclical to the public, entitled “Hominia Mônnis,” thus becoming the first Vatican official to address technology in his first public appearance, as well as taking the unusual step of personally launching the encyclical alongside Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah last May.

Earlier, Trump described concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and calls to slow its development as a "hoax that benefits no one but China ," across multiple official platforms.

Direct efforts from the Vatican
While concerns are growing about the safety of artificial intelligence within and outside the sector, the Vatican has decided to intervene itself and establish a commission to promote dialogue, study and research to find ways to ensure that "artificial intelligence does not reach the point of destroying humanity," according to an Associated Press report.

He also expressed relative optimism about the possibility of finding solutions, adding: "I think there are enough people who are seriously interested in this matter and willing to look into it."

Direct disagreement with the White House
The Pope’s remarks come against the backdrop of the evolving debate surrounding artificial intelligence in general, as the technology was strongly present at the recent United Nations summit , whether through the statements of the heads of state at the summit, or even in the Security Council session that hosted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amode.

The US president also met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the White House for a bilateral summit that touched on artificial intelligence, as well as a subsequent dinner that included top leaders of technology companies.

Trump had a late dinner with Amoudi on Sunday evening, during which they discussed concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and how to maintain American leadership in this sector.
