According to her, these factors include obesity, carbohydrate metabolism disorders, unhealthy lifestyle, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, and dyslipidemia. All of these factors can contribute to the development of diabetes. Therefore, our task today is the early detection and timely diagnosis of diabetes.
The doctor points out that the global strategy currently aims to combat obesity and prediabetes.
She says: "It is important, by encouraging patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle, to prevent these conditions from developing into diabetes. This problem is very complex at the moment, because diabetes is not just a high blood sugar level, but is also associated with the development of chronic and late complications that affect patients and reduce their quality of life."
According to her, diabetes can lead to blindness, contribute to kidney failure, significantly increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and may cause lower limb amputation. Furthermore, people with diabetes, especially type 2, are at increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
For his part, endocrinologist Dr. Pavel Baranov points out that a lack of physical activity and overeating are two key factors that may lead to type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
According to him, a person's activity level should be measured by the number of steps they take daily.
He says: "Few people take even 15,000 or 20,000 steps a day, and that's an exception, because most people, at best, take between 5,000 and 7,000 steps a day, and some even less, especially those who use their own cars."
It should be noted that, according to the National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology of the Russian Ministry of Health, diabetes has become a non-communicable epidemic, and the increase in the number of patients is mainly due to type 2 diabetes.
