"The diagram in the textbook does not show the proportions, the relative positions of organelles (cell parts), or the dynamics of processes," says Yulia Myakishova, the university's vice-rector for educational affairs. "The 3D atlas we created fills this gap."
According to a source in the press office, the atlas allows users to rotate and zoom a 3D cell model, extract individual organelles, and study their structure in detail. A special section includes animations of DNA replication, protein synthesis, chromatin condensation, mitosis, meiosis, mitosis, and vesicle movement. Users can pause the display at any stage, examine the processes frame by frame, and switch from a general cell view to the molecular level.
“We checked every organelle and every stage of the process, referring to the latest electron microscopy and molecular biology data,” says Yulia Khalitova, director of the university’s educational and research molecular biology laboratory. “We avoided the simplifications common in school diagrams: this is essential, as medical students should be dealing with a correct scientific picture of the cell, not a simplified illustration, from the first year.”
Alexander Kolesanov, the university's rector, asserts that the creation of such an atlas demonstrates the ability of Russian universities to develop world-class educational products.
The atlas is currently used in university education. Its creators plan to expand it in the future to include 3D models of plant and fungal cells, nerve cells, muscle cells, red blood cells, phagocytes, and germ cells.
