As is well known, wearable devices, from fitness trackers to medical sensors, collect a vast amount of data about a person. However, they often transmit this data to an external device, such as a phone, for processing. This drains battery power and requires a constant connection.
According to the press office of the Russian Science Foundation, researchers from the Kurchatov Institute and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology have proposed a solution to this problem. They have developed flexible memory resistors (memristors) – elements that store and process information simultaneously by changing their resistance under the influence of an electrical voltage. This is similar to the elasticity of the connections between neurons in the brain.
The material is based on parylene polymer with molybdenum oxide nanoparticles. Parylene is flexible and transparent and is approved for medical use, but its switching behavior is unstable. The use of nanoparticles has solved this problem: the device operates more efficiently than its competitors, withstanding more than a thousand switching cycles and bends with a radius of up to five millimeters. The device remains functional after hundreds of bends and for six months.
The simulation showed that the neural network using these variable resistors recognizes human physical activity from sensor signals with an accuracy of approximately 90 percent.
Researcher Anna Matsukatova, who is supervising the project, says: "Our innovation will find applications in medical health monitoring systems, neuro-prosthetics, and possibly in the field of machine vision, robotics, and big data processing. In the future, we plan to create flexible crossbeams: two sets of perpendicular conductive paths with a variable resistance at each intersection. In this network, signals are processed by the entire array at once, rather than by element, which improves speed and reduces power consumption."
