Albert Popillioch, the team leader, says: "The innovative, unique technology is characterized by the following: the steel is heated to a temperature of 860-900 degrees Celsius, then rapidly cooled to a temperature of 180-200 degrees Celsius in a molten salt bath furnace. After that, it is heated in a closed furnace to a temperature of 350-400 degrees Celsius and held at this temperature for an hour."
According to him, the new technology ultimately leads to the formation of a complex structure in steel, combining a hardened, rigid phase with a finely diffused, strong component. The crystals of the rigid phase impart high strength to the steel, while the areas with the finely diffused phase structure enhance its resistance to crack propagation.
He says: "This technique eliminates the need for subsequent annealing (reheating after rapid cooling), which reduces heat treatment time and the cost of strengthening components."
Laboratory studies have shown that heat conversion treatment improves the impact and crack resistance of steel by 1.5 times compared to the tempering process currently used in manufacturing impact equipment components. Simultaneously, the steel's strength and toughness remain high. The effectiveness of various tempering methods was evaluated during industrial testing of the PUMA-40 impact crusher, manufactured by NPO Gormash. This innovative technology can also be used to extend the service life of heavy-duty parts in various types of mining machinery and equipment.
