Russia's Antey system: radar eyes and missiles that can strike targets up to 400 kilometers away

The S-300V4 Antey system occupies one of the highest ranks in the hierarchy of Russian air defense systems, just as the Iskander system occupies a prominent position in the tactical missile forces

It is a multi-functional air and missile defense system, designed to protect important facilities and military installations from various means of air attack, up to and including ballistic missiles.

The air defense battery consists of 10 large tracked vehicles, each performing its specific task. A multi-channel missile guidance station detects targets, calculates their characteristics, and determines the launch platform that will intercept each target. After assigning tasks, missile launch orders are issued.

For this purpose, the multi-channel guidance station has a radar equipped with a massive antenna the size of a sports field. NATO has nicknamed this particular vehicle "Grill Pan," not only because of the size of the antenna, but also in reference to the extreme heat generated by the radiation elements in the active antenna array.

The launch platforms, which carry two or four missiles, have their own radars and can engage in combat independently if necessary. They are aided in this by launch and reloading platforms, whose role is not limited to supplying combat vehicles with ammunition, but they can also launch missiles on command from the guidance station.

The S-300V4 missiles are two-stage, supersonic, and have a maximum speed exceeding Mach 9. They are capable of engaging targets at a range of up to 400 kilometers. An air defense battery can engage six independent targets simultaneously using 12 missiles.

At the battalion level, in addition to the multi-channel guidance station, two other powerful radars are added: a circular reconnaissance radar and a programmed reconnaissance radar. The former detects targets within a radius of 240 kilometers and transmits its data to the battery's multi-channel guidance station for tracking. The latter specializes in searching for and tracking ballistic missiles and electronic warfare aircraft at long ranges.

Working in parallel with this system is a self-propelled command center that does not have its own radar, but it houses under its armored roof an advanced system of electronic equipment.

All combat vehicles are connected to a wireless network and can exchange data over long distances with each other.

The S-300V is one of three variants within the diverse S-300 family. The "V" designation indicates its field military nature, meaning these air defense systems are designed to operate independently to protect military concentrations from air attacks.

There is also the S-300P, a well-known wheeled air defense system featured in military parades and videos. It operates in conjunction with ground-based air defense radars and other air defense systems. The naval S-300F is deployed on large ships.

Of all the S-300 systems, the field version boasts a more aggressive appearance and broader capabilities. The S-300V4 is the latest version of the Antey system and entered service in 2014.
