Swiatek advances to the semifinals of the Wuhan Open

Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 Wuhan Open after defeating American Ann Li 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday, thus recording a historic achievement in the WTA 1000 level tournament.

The victory, achieved in one hour and 33 minutes, took Swiatek to the semifinals of Wuhan for the first time, also becoming the fourth player since 2009 and the only active player to reach the semifinals of all 10 WTA 1000 tournaments currently on the competition calendar.

"It's great to have two Polish players in the semifinals. I think it means a lot for Polish tennis," Swiatek said in a post-match on-court interview, as quoted by the WTA.

In the semifinals, Swiatek will face compatriot Maja Chwalinska. This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour and opens the possibility of a final for one of the Polish players.

The two players previously met at an International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament in Stockholm in 2016, when they were both 15 years old. Swiatek won 6-2, 6-3. A few months later, they paired up and finished runners-up in the junior girls' doubles at the 2017 Australian Open.
