Ministry of Communication and Digital is directing equitable data center development through regulations so that digital infrastructure is not only concentrated in developed areas.
"Yes, we're directing it through regulations. Just like the connectivity equality we're building," said Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria at Bali Tech Week 2026.
Nezar said the government is encouraging the development of digital infrastructure in various regions, including eastern Indonesia, which still requires development.
One mechanism for equalizing connectivity is through frequency auctions. The winning bidder is asked to build networks in two areas: one that is already developed and one that still needs development.
Nezar exemplified that this obligation could combine network development in regions such as Java and Papua so that infrastructure development is not only concentrated in developed areas.
He stated that data center development, particularly to support artificial intelligence (AI), is being directed away from being concentrated in Central Java and Batam. The development of these facilities is also being tailored to industry needs.
