Commander of the Cirebon Naval Base, Lieutenant Colonel (P) Mizar Hanoeng in Cirebon, West Java, Tuesday, said the presence of the legendary sailing ship was part of territorial development as well as an effort to broaden the public's insight into the maritime world.
"Dewaruci's presence here is part of our territorial development program and also to provide the people of Cirebon with insight into the Indonesian Navy's defense equipment and maritime capabilities," he said.
He explained that the KRI Dewaruci arrived was scheduled to dock for six days to give the public the opportunity to see firsthand the ship that has a long history of service to Indonesia.
Lanal Cirebon also opened an open ship activity for the general public, schools, students, and communities so that they could visit the ship and receive an explanation about the history of KRI Dewaruci.
Mizar said the visit was free of charge so that people could participate in the activity without having to pay to enter the ship.
To maintain order in visits, the party will distribute coupons to visitors so that the queue to enter the ship is more orderly and there is no crowding on the ship.
During the visit, he continued, the public can see parts of the ship directly and get an explanation about the history of the KRI Dewaruci, including the ship's long journey in carrying out its duties.
Mizar said the KRI Dewaruci has its own appeal, because the shape of the sailing ship is unique and its sailing history is known internationally.
"What's interesting is that this ship is a Navy training ship, and not all countries can afford it. You can see that from its unique shape," he said.
Meanwhile, the Commander of the KRI Dewaruci, Lieutenant Colonel (P) Nana Mashina, explained that the ship was built in West Germany in 1952 and officially entered the ranks of the Indonesian Navy on January 24, 1953.
