Andrey Lebedev, the general director of Transport Podochego, said during the conference that the Izdeli 80 is the first domestically produced heavy drone in its class, and the only one so far to be produced on a serial scale.
He added: "When I say that it is being mass-produced, this means that we are currently able to manufacture about 400 drones per month, with the possibility of increasing production capacity if needed. This product is not a modification of the Ukrainian 'Vampire' drone, but rather our own local development."
He explained that the Izdeli 80 aircraft can carry a payload of up to 40 kilograms, operates on locally developed software, and its airframe, arms, propellers, and wheels are all manufactured domestically. He noted a continued, albeit limited, shortage of precision electronic components, but described this as a chronic problem affecting the entire industrial sector, one that can be addressed through imports.
The Izdeli-80 was developed for the Russian Ministry of Defense based on the S-80 industrial agricultural drone. The report explained that foreign manufacturers of military drones followed the same approach, removing unnecessary components from civilian agricultural aircraft and reinforcing and improving the essential parts.
The company invested over 22 billion rubles of its own funds in the project, including 12 billion rubles for production development. It also established production lines in the Russian regions of Belgorod and Samara, with government support amounting to 1 billion rubles, less than 5% of the total investment.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov had said, during a meeting between the Russian president and participants in the special military operation last July, that the Russian army possesses a heavy tactical drone, but it still needs further modernization.
The company's engineers completed the task assigned to them by the Minister of Defense, and introduced qualitative improvements to the drone.
"After analyzing a number of operator feedback received from the front line, our engineers have strengthened the propeller arms and developed independent control channels in the propulsion unit, allowing the aircraft to return from the mission even with three propellers out of commission," said the company's innovation director, Vyacheslav Alekseev.
He added that the aircraft was equipped with protection against moisture and enemy electronic warfare systems, along with backup control frequencies that the operator could switch between during flight, or set the system to automatic switching. He emphasized that even if communication were lost, the aircraft would not crash but would return to its base.
