The statement published by the federation on its official Facebook page reads: “In light of the incident that occurred during the Hope Week tournament in Sheffield, England, this October, in which the coach of player Zeina Farouk, Mohamed Mumtaz, appeared to slap her in the face after the end of one of her matches, the board of directors of the Egyptian Table Tennis Federation, headed by Major General Ashraf Helmy, held an emergency meeting on Wednesday evening, October 28, 2026, to discuss the circumstances of the incident and take the necessary measures.”

The federation's decisions included removing Captain Mohamed Mumtaz from its records and preventing him from practicing any activity related to table tennis, in addition to submitting the results of the investigations to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Egyptian Olympic Committee to take what is necessary in light of the jurisdiction of each entity.

In its statement, the federation affirmed its full respect for the moral, artistic, and sporting rights of all players, and its complete rejection of any practices that contradict the ethical values and principles upon which sport is based, stressing that protecting the rights of players and preserving their dignity is among its top priorities.

He explained that the purpose of practicing sports goes beyond achieving victories and winning championships, to include establishing respect, discipline, sportsmanship, and providing a safe environment for all athletes.

The decision to suspend the federation came after the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports gave the federation a 48-hour deadline to provide it with the results of the investigations into the incident, which sparked widespread controversy after the video clip was circulated on social media.

In contrast, Zeina Farouk's mother denied in a video recording that her daughter had been slapped, claiming that the coach merely tried to scare or warn her without touching her face, according to her account. She defended Mohamed Mumtaz, asserting that he had been coaching her daughter for years, and accused certain individuals within the sports community of exploiting the incident to settle personal scores.
