The way you perceive time can determine your psychological state

Scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder in the United States concluded that the feeling of happiness is not related to the number of hours of free time a person has, as much as it is related to their view of their free time and how they evaluate it.

The study on this subject was published in the "Journal of American College Health".

A survey of 646 students revealed that busier students reported fewer depressive symptoms and performed better academically. Conversely, a persistent feeling of being unable to keep up with the times led to increased levels of anxiety and depression, regardless of how busy the students actually were.

Mindfulness, the ability to redirect attention to the present moment, proved to play a particularly important role. Among the most mindful participants, the association between feeling pressed for time and a decline in psychological well-being was weaker.

The study does not prove that a busy schedule protects against depression, as the relationship can sometimes be the opposite. However, it does call into question the simple equation that "fewer tasks mean less stress."

The study's lead author, Caitlin McKimmy, said: "Not only should our schedules change, but our relationship with time as well."

According to the specialist, it's important to plan tasks wisely, be able to refuse excessive burdens, and consider personal needs. It's also important to avoid situations where a person regularly skips meals or tries to make up for lost sleep only on weekends, as these habits increase stress levels.

The specialist stressed, saying: "It is important to allocate time correctly, to be able to say no, and to choose what suits us without fear of upsetting anyone."

Psychologist Caitlin McKimmy previously confirmed that the development of depression can be accompanied by a gradual loss of interest and motivation, to the point where a person stops trying to change anything and acts out of habit. Another potentially worrying sign she pointed to is a prolonged reluctance to engage in activities that previously brought the person satisfaction.
