The Taiz Governorate Siege Affairs Office (government) said in a statement issued late Friday evening that “three civilians, including two women, were killed as a result of shelling by the Houthi group on the Sabr al-Mawadim district in the south of the governorate.”
The office explained that the dead were Safwan Saeed Obaid (28 years old), Asia Abdul Samad Saeed Ahmed (55 years old), and Safia Hazaa Saif Al-Badani, without specifying the age of the latter.
He added that the group launched sporadic shelling on the Al-Shaqab area south of Taiz, and Aqqaqa west of the governorate, resulting in the injury of 5 civilians, including two women.
There was no immediate comment from the Houthi group regarding what the government office reported.
On Friday, the Yemeni army announced that it had thwarted a large-scale Houthi attack on the Al-Shaqab front south of Taiz, following clashes that lasted for about 8 hours and resulted in the death of 16 members of the group and the injury of others, according to a statement from the Taiz military axis.
The army also announced that it had launched airstrikes on Houthi positions in the Al-Hangar point, Al-Maqababa and Al-Kamil hills in the Al-Dhabab area west of Taiz, and targeted military reinforcements, weapons and equipment belonging to the group east of the Al-Shaqab front south of the governorate.
The Houthis did not immediately comment on the army's announcement regarding the outcome of military operations in Taiz.
For its part, the Yemeni government’s “Giants Forces” announced on Saturday that they had targeted Houthi gatherings in Lahj province in the southwest of the country.
In a statement released via the US-based company “X”, it said that its forces “are pounding gatherings of the terrorist Houthi militia with precise strikes on the Al-Mudharabah front” in Lahj Governorate, without providing further details.
These developments are part of a military escalation that began last July, and is the most extensive since the relative calm that Yemen witnessed following a truce that began in April 2022.
Yemen has been embroiled in war since the Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014, before an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in March 2015 in support of the Yemeni government.
On the other hand, the coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen announced on Saturday the destruction of two ballistic missile launch platforms in the Yemeni province of Saada.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said in a brief post on the “X” platform that “two ballistic missile launch platforms were destroyed in Saada Governorate (northern Yemen),” without providing further details.
In this context, the Saudi Civil Defense announced on Saturday that the danger had passed from the city of Abha and the Khamis Mushait governorate in the southwest of the Kingdom, minutes after issuing early warnings for the second time during the day, without clarifying the nature of the danger.
The Civil Defense said in two posts on the “X” platform that the danger has passed from Abha and Khamis Mushait, calling for continued adherence to safety instructions and avoiding gatherings and taking pictures.
This came after two alerts were issued via the National Emergency Early Warning Platform to warn of a danger in the two regions.
Earlier on Saturday, the Civil Defense announced the issuance of two similar warnings in Abha and Khamis Mushait, before announcing that the danger had passed from them minutes later.
Thus, the two regions witnessed two rounds of alerts during Saturday, without the Saudi authorities revealing the nature of the danger that prompted them.
The attacks come amid a continuing military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group since last July, which has included targeting civilian aviation facilities and energy installations in the kingdom.
