Dr. Valery Litvinov from Perm Technical University points out that this term does not refer to a specific new pathogen, as several common seasonal viral infections can occur without fever.
According to him, a similar pattern is observed with human pneumonia virus (meta-pneumovir), adenovirus, seasonal coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and rhinovirus. For many of these viruses, the absence of fever is perfectly normal.
For example, a slight fever is often present with adenovirus infection, and up to half of those infected may not show any symptoms. Similarly, rhinovirus, the most common cause of the common cold, usually presents with mild symptoms and does not involve a fever.
The danger of the "silent" course of the disease lies in the possibility that people may ignore their infection and continue to transmit it to others. These same viruses can cause bronchitis, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress in people with weakened immune systems or chronic lung and heart conditions.
The doctor points out that in mild cases, coronavirus infection often occurs without fever, but in high-risk groups it can lead to serious complications, and sometimes to post-COVID-19 syndrome.
According to him, there is no specific treatment for most of these viruses, and treatment is limited to relieving symptoms, such as nasal irrigation, drinking plenty of fluids, and using throat lozenges. The only available vaccine for these viruses is the COVID-19 vaccine.
Common preventive measures also help protect against infection, including washing hands for about 20 seconds, wearing masks in crowded places, which may reduce the risk of infection by about 1.8 times, in addition to getting enough sleep, following a healthy diet, and ventilating enclosed spaces well.
The doctor points out that respiratory infections peak in the fall and winter, and due to the similarity of symptoms, people are often unable to accurately identify the disease they are suffering from.
The expert emphasizes that it is impossible to accurately identify the pathogen with the naked eye. Therefore, if the condition worsens and symptoms such as shortness of breath, high fever, or extreme weakness appear, a doctor should be consulted instead of resorting to self-treatment, especially for people belonging to the most vulnerable groups.
