Unusual causes of neck pain

Dr. Dmitry Simkin, an orthopedic specialist, stated that neck strain does not always originate from the neck itself, as its cause may sometimes be related to events that occurred years ago, such as a chronic ankle injury.

He says: "After a chronic ankle injury, for example - even if it occurred in childhood - the tissues in the injured area may remain tense. This tension creates a load, to which the body gradually adapts. The body's position changes slightly, leaning towards the injured area, and the muscles become active to achieve stability, often with greater force on the opposite side."

Some injuries may occur during childbirth, for example in the pelvis, shoulders, neck or head, and these affect the distribution of the load in the body for years.

He says: "The same applies to previous inflammations. That is, even years after an inflammation has occurred in the stomach, intestines, or other organs, the tissues in that area may remain tense. This creates tension that forces the body to adapt to. As a result, another part of the body, including the muscles and joints of the neck, may be subjected to additional strain."

According to him, prolonged compensatory muscle tension leads to muscle pain and increased stress on the joints and spine. This disrupts tissue nutrition and may cause degenerative changes. The body attempts to adapt by increasing blood flow and stimulating an inflammatory response. If this tension persists, the inflammation becomes chronic and exacerbates the problem.
