US suspends "visa-free" for Chinese citizens in Northern Mariana

US Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin has decided to suspend the visa-free program for Chinese citizens wishing to visit the Northern Mariana Islands.

"This notice announces the decision of the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security to suspend the Security and Economic Vitality Travel Authorization Program in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The program allows Chinese nationals, who have undergone preliminary screening, to travel to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands without a visa for temporary visits under certain conditions," the notice said.
According to US authorities, the program could allegedly be used for espionage and so-called "birth tourism" activities.

The decision is expected to come into effect on October 30, 2026.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is a U.S. territory that is neither a state nor the District of Columbia.
