Researchers analyzed data from 13,274 people over the age of 65, collected between 2008 and 2018. At the start of the study, none of them had stomach ulcers. They assessed dietary diversity according to nine food product groups and the effect of this diversity on health.
The results showed that people who followed varied diets were 24% less likely to develop stomach ulcers compared to those who followed diets with limited food products. Meanwhile, each additional point on the dietary diversity scale corresponded to a reduction in risk of about 5.6%.
The relationship persisted after taking into account age, lifestyle, health status and other factors. In addition, the most pronounced relationship was observed in the early years of the study, and after three years of observation it was no longer statistically significant.
Researchers assume that a varied diet provides the body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs to strengthen immunity and help fight diseases, including viruses and bacteria that may cause stomach ulcers . However, the effect of this diet may be short-lived, so it is necessary to eat a variety of foods that combine meat, vegetables, and fruits continuously.
