Zinc deficiency may worsen inflammatory bowel diseases

A study published in the scientific journal "Nutrients" showed that a deficiency of the element zinc in the body is associated with an increased risk of exacerbating inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

The researchers pointed out that zinc plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, producing intestinal mucus, and regulating immune responses, and that a deficiency of it can disrupt these processes, making intestinal tissues more susceptible to inflammation and damage. Therefore, they analyzed the results of several studies related to zinc and its effect on the intestines.

The results showed that a deficiency affects nearly half of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, and that a deficiency in the body increases the risk of exacerbating these diseases and their consequences, including hospitalization and bowel surgery. This association was particularly observed in those with Crohn's disease.

The researchers also discovered that inflammation itself reduces zinc concentrations in the blood, so a low level does not always indicate a true deficiency, but may be a result of disease activity.

The scientists noted that there is not yet sufficient evidence that taking zinc supplements alone reduces the risk of worsening bowel diseases or improves the patient's health, but prompt diagnosis and treatment of zinc deficiency should remain part of the medical care for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Health experts warn that a zinc deficiency in the body affects some vital functions and the nervous system. Among the most prominent symptoms of this deficiency are weakened immunity, dry skin, deteriorating hair and nail health, poor night vision, loss of appetite, and insomnia.
