The researchers analyzed 36 scientific studies on the relationship between diet and gum health in adults, and examined the effects of different vitamins and nutrients, and various dietary patterns, on the development of periodontitis.
They found that adequate protein intake is associated with reduced gum bleeding , while a high-fiber diet is associated with reduced bone loss around the teeth, and therefore a lower risk of tooth loss.
Furthermore, higher consumption of vitamins C and D was associated with a reduced risk of periodontitis, and positive associations were also found for vitamins A, E and K, flavonoids, vegetables, and fruits. People who regularly consume these foods have shown fewer signs of damage to the supporting tissues of the teeth.
The overall character of nutrition was of particular importance, as diets with anti-inflammatory properties were associated with a reduced risk of the disease, while diets that promote inflammatory processes were associated with an increased risk.
The researchers believe that dietary recommendations can be a useful addition to the treatment and prevention of periodontitis, but most of the studies reviewed were observational, and therefore the discovered associations do not prove that changing the diet itself prevents the disease.
