Genetic traits that negate the effectiveness of blood-thinning drugs in some patients

Scientists from Russia’s Astrakhan Medical University, while studying individual drug sensitivity, discovered that a third of the local population had a reduced ability to absorb a blood-thinning drug.

It is worth noting that every person has unique characteristics that extend beyond their physical appearance or personality to include how their body responds to medication. What may be beneficial for one person could be useless or even harmful to another. This was stated by a spokesperson for Astrakhan State Medical University in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The spokesperson said: "There are a huge number of drugs, more than 11,000 brand names, and it is often difficult to predict how the human body will respond to a particular drug without special tests. It is not just about allergies, but also about how efficiently the body absorbs the drug, its tolerance, and the likelihood of it causing unwanted side effects."

Dr. Bella Kantemirova, a professor at the university and a doctor of medical sciences, explained that an individual's response to drugs depends largely on genetic factors.

She gave the example of a blood thinner, noting that its effects require activation by a specific enzyme in the liver. However, studies have shown that approximately 30% of the population of the Astrakhan region carry genetic traits that impair this process, meaning the drug may be ineffective for up to a third of patients. This is particularly significant in cases of heart disease, as reduced drug effectiveness can increase the risk of blood clots.

Over 15 years of medical research, scientists analyzed the genetic data of more than 1,700 people. The results showed that the population of Astrakhan has a high predisposition to adverse drug reactions, as well as altered efficacy of some medications.

Therefore, personalized drug therapy centers are being opened in Astrakhan and other regions where such cases have been observed, where doctors develop individual treatment plans that take into account the genetic characteristics of each patient.
